What can I expect in the beginning of therapy?

The first session provides a chance for us to discuss your current concerns and related history. Sometimes this can be accomplished in one session, and sometimes we’ll need 1 or 2 more sessions with either you or your child. I also may want to observe your child at school if the difficulties present in the school setting. After this initial assessment period, we’ll discuss my recommendations. Usually, I recommend weekly therapy sessions to start addressing your concerns. In some cases, I may also recommend further evaluations or consultations with other types of providers.

In addition, I will also assess whether it seems helpful to collaborate with your child’s school team. I may recommend school interventions that we can do to help your child succeed. With your permission, I will connect with your child’s school, attend meetings, and provide consultation to teachers about your child.

Prior to your first session, I’ll ask you to complete forms through my secure online portal (e.g, Demographics, HIPAA notice, Services Agreement).

Will I be attending the sessions with my child?

This depends on various factors and differs for each patient and family. I will discuss this with you at the beginning of treatment. Typically for child therapy, it is best when parents are heavily involved in the treatment to pave the way for the child’s success. This means that I may meet alone with the parent(s) for their own sessions, or for part of a session, and then meet with the child afterwards. Often, I meet with parents and children together.

How does payment work? Do you accept insurance?

Patients pay for their sessions directly to me. Payment is required on the day of the session. While I do not accept insurance, I provide patients with a monthly statement to submit to their insurance company to access out-of-network reimbursement (if your plan allows for that). Many insurance plans provide some percentage of reimbursement. If you’re considering working with me, you can call your insurance carrier to ask about reimbursement ahead of time. The codes I generally use are 90834, 90846, and 90791. Also be sure to ask about telehealth coverage.
